National WWII Memorial 20th Anniversary Commemoration: Honoring the Legacy of Heroes
On May 25th, Washington DC hosted the National World War II 20th Anniversary Commemoration, a poignant and powerful event held during Memorial Day Weekend. This significant occasion marked two decades since the dedication of the National World War II Memorial, a site that stands as a testament to the bravery, sacrifice, and enduring legacy of the Greatest Generation.
A Historical Milestone: The National World War II Memorial, located on the National Mall, was officially dedicated on May 29, 2004. It honors the 16 million Americans who served in the armed forces during World War II, the more than 400,000 who died, and the countless others who supported the war effort on the home front. The memorial, designed by Friedrich St. Florian, features 56 granite pillars and a pair of triumphal arches surrounding a plaza and fountain, symbolizing the unity and sacrifice of the states and territories of the United States during the war.
The Commemoration Event: This year’s commemoration was a solemn yet celebratory event, bringing together veterans, their families, dignitaries, and the public to reflect on the past and honor those who served. The ceremony began with the Presentation of Colors by the Armed Forces Color Guard followed by the playing of the National Anthem by the United States Army Brass Quintet.
Welcome remarks were made by Mr. Jeffrey Reinbold, Superintenden, National Mall and Memorial Parks. Remarks were also given by Mrs. Jane Droppa, Chair, Friends of the National WWII Memorial and Admiral Christopher W. Grady, Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. The keynote address was given by The Honorable Marcy Kaptur, U.S. House of Representatives. After the Presentation of the Wreaths, the United States Army Brass Quintet played Taps and a service medley that resonated through the heart of the nation’s capital.
