Gold Star Mothers
About Veterans and Athletes United

Gold Star Mothers

Gold Star Mothers are a group of women who have lost a son or daughter in military service to the United States. The term "Gold Star" refers to the tradition of families of service members displaying a service flag in their homes. The flag includes a blue star for each immediate family member serving in the armed forces. If that loved one dies, the blue star is replaced by a gold star, signifying the family's loss and the honor and sacrifice of their loved one.

Origin of Gold Star Mothers: The Gold Star tradition began during World War I. The practice was formalized in 1918 when President Woodrow Wilson approved a recommendation for mothers who lost a child in the war to wear a gold star on the traditional black mourning band.

American Gold Star Mothers, Inc.: This organization was established in 1928 by Grace Darling Seibold, who lost her son in World War I. The organization provides support to mothers who have lost children in military service and works to honor and remember the fallen.
