Blue's Bold Dance: Shapiro's Sculpture at the Kennedy Center's REACH
In the heart of Washington, DC, on the Upper Lawn of the Kennedy Center’s REACH, Joel Shapiro’s Blue (2019) commands attention.
This 24-foot-high painted aluminum sculpture, a gift from the artist himself, captures the exuberance of youth with its dynamic, stick-figure-like form. Poised mid-kick, Blue transforms the surrounding landscape into a vibrant stage, as if ready to pirouette across the grass. Unveiled during the REACH’s opening festival in September 2019, it embodies the Kennedy Center’s mission to blend art and accessibility in a 21st-century cultural space.
Joel Shapiro, a renowned American sculptor who passed away in June 2025 at age 83, was celebrated for his ability to infuse simple geometric shapes with movement and emotion. Born in Manhattan in 1941, Shapiro’s early exposure to art came through childhood visits to the Metropolitan Museum and a formative two-year stint in the Peace Corps in India during the 1960s. There, he was inspired by the seamless integration of art and culture, which shaped his approach to creating sculptures that feel alive, defying gravity with a sense of playfulness and balance.
Blue is more than a visual spectacle; it’s a metaphor for thought and freedom.
A Noble Mare at the REACH: Deborah Butterfield’s Milk River
Nestled in the verdant landscape of the REACH expansion at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, DC, stands Milk River, a captivating bronze sculpture by renowned artist Deborah Butterfield. This life-sized mare, seemingly crafted from weathered driftwood, grazes peacefully amid the ginkgo trees, blending art seamlessly with nature since its installation in 2019. A gift from philanthropist Samuel G. Rose, the piece invites visitors to ponder the harmony between human creativity and the natural world.
Milk River exemplifies Butterfield's signature process: she assembled pieces of driftwood into the form of a horse, cast each segment in bronze, burned away the wood, reassembled the metal components, and painted them to evoke the original organic texture. Standing at 87 inches high, the sculpture appears as if washed ashore by a gentle current, its illusory wooden limbs capturing the grace and strength of a living animal. The name draws from the Milk River in Montana, near where Butterfield works, symbolizing the fluid, life-giving essence of rivers and perhaps alluding to her themes of nourishment and creation.
