Exclusive: Basquiat and Banksy Take Center Stage at Hirshhorn Museum

The Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, D.C. is hosting a significant exhibition titled "Basquiat × Banksy" as part of its 50th anniversary celebration. This exhibition marks the first time works by either Jean-Michel Basquiat or Banksy will be displayed at the museum.

The exhibition centers on two major paintings:

"Boy and Dog in a Johnnypump" (1982) by Jean-Michel Basquiat

  • A vibrant neoexpressionist representation of a Black boy and his dog at play
  • Measures nearly 14 feet long
  • Sold for over $100 million in 2020

"Banksquiat. Boy and Dog in Stop and Search" (2018) by Banksy

  • Created as a response to Basquiat's work
  • Features the same skeletal figures but with two police officers patting down the boy
  • Originally painted on a wall at London's Barbican Center in 2017

Additional Works

  • 20 small works on paper and wood by Basquiat, created between 1979 and 1985
  • The film "Downtown 81," starring Basquiat, depicting Manhattan's 1980s avant-garde scene
