On a sunny and lively afternoon, The Wharf DC was bustling with excitement as it hosted the much-anticipated 12th Annual Running of the Chihuahuas. This whimsical event, held on Sunday, May 19th, brought together dog lovers, competitive Chihuahua owners, and curious onlookers for a day filled with laughter, excitement, and a healthy dose of competition.
The centerpiece of the event was, of course, the race. The Running of the Chihuahuas featured twenty-four heats where these tiny but mighty dogs sprinted down a 60-foot track. Each heat consisted of a group of eager Chihuahuas, some donning colorful outfits.
The Champion Chihuahua of the day was Momo, a spirited and swift dog who captured the hearts of many.
Race Proceeds
All race proceeds benefit Rural Dog Rescue. They are a non-profit organization dedicated to saving the lives of high risk dogs in economically challenged, high-kill shelters in rural areas That dogs are often overlooked for adoption or rescue.
The Running of the Chihuahuas at The Wharf DC was more than just a race; it was a celebration of the joy and companionship that pets bring into our lives. With its blend of competition, creativity, and community spirit, the event left everyone looking forward to next year's festivities. Whether you're a dog owner, a pet lover, or simply someone who enjoys a lively community event, The Running of the Chihuahuas is an experience not to be missed.
Dog Costume Contest
In addition to the thrilling races, the event featured a dog costume contest that drew as much attention as the main event. Chihuahuas dressed in creative and often elaborate costumes paraded in front of a panel of judges. The Costume Contest Winner was Milo dressed as a Metro Forward car.
